History of Oradell
Summary: Here is a brief history of Oradell for both residents, viistors, or anyone considering moving there.
Oradell, New Jersey, is a borough with a rich history that dates back to its incorporation on March 8, 1894, from portions of Harrington Township. Nestled in Bergen County, Oradell is a community that has evolved significantly over the years while maintaining its small-town charm.
Originally known as 'Delford,' a blend of the names from the towns of Oradell and New Milford, the borough changed its name to Oradell in 1920, derived from 'Ora,' Latin for 'edge,' and 'Dell.' This change was influenced by the presence of the Oradell Reservoir, which remains a central feature of the town.
The area was first inhabited by the Lenni Lenape Native Americans, and later by Dutch settlers in the 17th century. The arrival of the railroad in the 19th century spurred growth and development, transforming Oradell from a rural farming community into a more suburban locale. The borough's growth continued through the 20th century, with the construction of homes and the establishment of businesses and schools.
Today, Oradell is known for its excellent school system, beautiful parks, and a strong sense of community. The Oradell Public Library, founded in 1914, and the Atwood-Blauvelt Mansion, built in 1897, stand as testaments to the borough's commitment to preserving its history and culture. Residents and potential newcomers alike appreciate Oradell's blend of historical roots and modern conveniences, making it a unique and desirable place to live.
