History of Oldwick

By Betsy Burlingame

Summary: Here is a brief history of Oldwick for both residents, viistors, or anyone considering moving there.

Oldwick is a village that exudes a sense of timeless charm, nestled within Tewksbury Township in Hunterdon County, New Jersey. Its history is as rich as the soil that once made this area a hub for agriculture and milling. The village, originally known as New Germantown, was settled by German immigrants in the 18th century. These early settlers were drawn to the area by the promise of fertile land and the opportunity to create a new life in the New World.

The name Oldwick came into use in the early 19th century, reflecting the community's growth and evolution. The village's architecture provides a window into its past, with many buildings dating back to the 18th and 19th centuries. The Zion Lutheran Church, established in 1714, is one of the oldest Lutheran congregations in New Jersey, and its current building, constructed in 1828, stands as a testament to Oldwick's historical significance.

Throughout the 19th and early 20th centuries, Oldwick continued to thrive as a local center for trade and agriculture. The village's picturesque landscape, characterized by rolling hills and rural tranquility, has made it an attractive destination for those seeking a respite from the hustle and bustle of city life. Today, Oldwick retains much of its historical character, with its well-preserved colonial homes, stone buildings, and the Oldwick Historic District being listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

For residents and potential newcomers, Oldwick offers a unique blend of historical heritage and pastoral beauty, making it a cherished place to live, steeped in the rich tapestry of New Jersey's history.
