History of Old Brookville

By Betsy Burlingame

Summary: A short history of Old Brookville is provided below for residents and anyone considering moving there.

Old Brookville, located on the North Shore of Long Island, is a village steeped in history and charm. Established in 1929, it is part of the greater area known as the Gold Coast, which gained fame in the early 20th century for its concentration of opulent estates and wealthy residents. This picturesque village was once the home to captains of industry and finance, who built grand mansions amidst the rolling hills and lush landscapes.

The area that would become Old Brookville was originally inhabited by the Matinecock Native American tribe. European settlers, predominantly of English descent, began to establish farms and communities in the 17th century. The rural character of the region attracted affluent New Yorkers who sought a bucolic retreat from the city. By the Roaring Twenties, the Gold Coast had become synonymous with luxury and extravagance, inspiring F. Scott Fitzgerald's classic novel, "The Great Gatsby."

As time progressed, many of the large estates were subdivided into smaller properties, yet Old Brookville has managed to maintain its pastoral allure. The village today is characterized by its spacious homes, tree-lined streets, and a commitment to preserving its historical legacy. Residents enjoy a high quality of life with access to excellent schools, parks, and local amenities, while still being within commuting distance of New York City.

For those living in or considering a move to Old Brookville, the village represents a unique blend of historical significance and modern luxury, offering a serene lifestyle that honors its rich past.
