History of Nyack

By Betsy Burlingame

Summary: A short history of Nyack is provided below for residents and anyone considering moving there.

Nyack, New York, is a village rich in history and culture, nestled along the west bank of the Hudson River. The area was originally inhabited by the Lenape Native Americans, who called the land "Nay-Ack," which is believed to mean "the fishing place." European settlers, primarily Dutch, began to arrive in the early 17th century, and the village was officially incorporated in 1872.

During the 19th century, Nyack became a bustling river town, known for its shipbuilding and manufacturing industries. The Nyack Turnpike, completed in 1839, connected the village to Jersey City, and the arrival of the Northern Railroad of New Jersey in 1859 further stimulated growth. The Tappan Zee Bridge, opened in 1955, was a significant development, connecting Nyack to Westchester County and beyond.

Nyack's strategic location made it a key player during the Revolutionary War, with British troops passing through the area. The village also has a strong connection to the arts, with Edward Hopper, the renowned American realist painter, being born here in 1882. His childhood home is now a landmark and an arts center.

Today, Nyack is known for its vibrant downtown, diverse community, and rich cultural scene, including a thriving arts community, unique shops, and a variety of restaurants. Its historical architecture, scenic parks, and proximity to New York City make it an attractive place for residents and visitors alike.

Whether you're a history buff, an art enthusiast, or someone seeking a charming community with a small-town feel, Nyack offers a unique blend of history and modern living that continues to draw people to its picturesque shores.
