History of Nutley

By Joshua Wood, LPC

Summary: Here is a brief history of Nutley for both residents, viistors, or anyone considering moving there.

Nutley, New Jersey, is a town with a rich history that dates back to the pre-colonial era. Originally inhabited by the Lenni-Lenape Native Americans, the area was later settled by the Dutch in the 1600s. The town's name has evolved over time, from being part of the larger Newark settlement to being called Franklin, and finally, in 1874, it was named Nutley after the estate of the Satterthwaite family, who were prominent settlers.

During the 19th century, Nutley became a hub for artists and writers, attracted by the picturesque landscape along the Passaic River. This period, known as the "Nutley Velveteen Era," saw the establishment of many studios and the growth of a vibrant cultural community. The town's artistic legacy is still celebrated today.

The industrial revolution brought factories and mills to Nutley, diversifying its economy and increasing its population. Notably, the Nutley Velveteen Company and the Nutley Iron Works were significant employers. As the town industrialized, it maintained a balance with its natural beauty, with parks designed by the noted landscape architect Frederick Law Olmsted, who co-designed Central Park in New York City.

Today, Nutley is known for its excellent schools, close-knit community, and convenient location just 12 miles from New York City. Its history is preserved in the Nutley Historical Society and Museum, ensuring that residents and newcomers can appreciate the town's storied past. With a blend of historical charm and modern amenities, Nutley continues to be a desirable place to live in the heart of Essex County.
