History of North Arlington

By Joshua Wood, LPC

Summary: A short history of North Arlington is provided below for residents and anyone considering moving there.

North Arlington, a borough in Bergen County, New Jersey, has a rich history that dates back to its early settlement in the 19th century. Originally part of the Township of Union, the area that is now North Arlington was primarily agricultural, with its fertile land along the Passaic River supporting various farms and orchards.

With the arrival of the Erie Railroad in the 1880s, North Arlington began to transform. The improved transportation links spurred industrial growth and attracted a wave of immigrants, particularly from Ireland and Italy, who sought work in the burgeoning factories and mills. This influx of new residents led to the development of residential neighborhoods and the establishment of a tight-knit community.

In 1896, North Arlington was officially incorporated as a borough, separating from Union Township. The early 20th century saw continued growth as the borough became a suburban haven for those working in nearby cities like Newark and New York City. The construction of homes and the expansion of public services, including schools and parks, reflected the community's evolution into a suburban residential area.

Today, North Arlington is known for its small-town feel, diverse population, and proximity to major urban centers. It offers residents a blend of historical charm and modern convenience, making it an attractive place for families and individuals alike. The borough's commitment to preserving its history, while looking towards the future, continues to define its unique character within the Garden State.
