History of New London

By Joshua Wood, LPC

Summary: It's helpful for people considering moving to New London to understand it's history and how it has developed into the community it is today.

New London, Connecticut, a city rich in history, has been a significant player in the story of America since its founding. Established by English Puritans in 1646, the city was named after London, England, and quickly became a bustling port due to its strategic location at the mouth of the Thames River and on the shores of Long Island Sound.

During the colonial era, New London prospered as a center of maritime trade. Whaling and the seal trade were particularly lucrative, and the city's wealth grew. This prosperity was evident in the grand houses and public buildings that still grace the city's streets. The American Revolution brought challenges; most notably, in 1781, British forces under the command of Benedict Arnold burned much of the city during the Battle of Groton Heights.

In the 19th century, New London continued to thrive as a whaling hub until the industry's decline. The city then adapted, becoming a center for manufacturing and railroads. The United States Coast Guard Academy was established in 1915, further solidifying New London's maritime legacy.

Today, New London is known for its vibrant arts scene, historic waterfront, and diverse community. The city's past is preserved in landmarks like the Hempsted Houses, the Monte Cristo Cottage, and the New London Ledge Lighthouse. For residents and those considering making New London their home, the city offers a unique blend of historical charm and modern vitality.
