History of New Canaan

By Betsy Burlingame

Summary: Here is a brief history of New Canaan for both residents, viistors, or anyone considering moving there.

New Canaan, Connecticut, with its picturesque landscapes and rich history, is a town that offers a unique blend of small-town charm and cosmopolitan amenities. Originally inhabited by the Siwanoy band of the Algonquin nation, the area was later settled by Europeans in 1640 as part of Norwalk. It wasn't until 1731 that New Canaan branched off as its own parish, named Canaan Parish, and was incorporated as a town in 1801.

The town's early economy was driven by farming, shoemaking, and later, the rise of the silver industry. However, New Canaan's true transformation came in the 20th century when it became a haven for the modern architectural movement. The "Harvard Five," a group of architects including Philip Johnson and Marcel Breuer, made their mark on the town by building groundbreaking modern homes, such as the famous Glass House by Johnson.

Today, New Canaan is known for its excellent schools, thriving arts scene, and a downtown area filled with chic boutiques and fine dining. Its commitment to preserving open spaces and historical sites, like the Colonial-era Hanford-Silliman House and the 62-acre Waveny Park, reflects the town's respect for its past. For those considering moving to New Canaan, they will find a community that values both its historical roots and its present-day cultural and architectural vibrancy.

Whether you're a history buff, an architecture enthusiast, or someone who appreciates the balance of nature and refined living, New Canaan offers a unique place to call home with a storied past and a bright future.
