History of Naugatuck

By Joshua Wood, LPC

Summary: Here is a brief history of Naugatuck for both residents, viistors, or anyone considering moving there.

Naugatuck, a borough in New Haven County, Connecticut, has a rich history that dates back to the pre-colonial era. Originally inhabited by the Algonquin Native American tribe, the area was first settled by Europeans in 1701 as part of Waterbury. It was named after the Naugatuck River, which means "lone tree by the fishing place" in the Algonquin language.

The town was incorporated in 1844 and quickly became an industrial hub, thanks to the Naugatuck River's power. The growth of the rubber industry, particularly the United States Rubber Company (later Uniroyal), played a significant role in Naugatuck's development. Charles Goodyear's vulcanization process, which he discovered in nearby Naugatuck, was instrumental in the rubber industry's success.

Throughout the 19th and 20th centuries, Naugatuck's economy thrived on manufacturing, with a focus on rubber, chemicals, and metals. The town's industrial success led to a population boom and the creation of a diverse community. Naugatuck's architecture reflects this period of prosperity, with many historic homes and buildings still standing today.

In recent years, Naugatuck has transitioned from its industrial roots to a more service-oriented economy, while preserving its historical charm. The borough's commitment to community and economic development makes it an attractive place for residents and businesses alike. With its rich history, scenic beauty, and strong sense of community, Naugatuck continues to be a desirable location for those looking to live in a town with a storied past and a promising future.
