History of Montvale

By Joshua Wood, LPC

Summary: It's helpful for people considering moving to Montvale to understand it's history and how it has developed into the community it is today.

Montvale, New Jersey, is a borough with a rich history that dates back to its incorporation on August 31, 1894, from portions of Orvil Township and Washington Township. Nestled in Bergen County, Montvale is a community that has grown from its humble beginnings into a sought-after place to live for those seeking a suburban lifestyle with proximity to New York City.

Before European settlers arrived, the area was inhabited by the Lenape Native Americans, who left behind a legacy of trails and names. The Dutch were the first Europeans to settle in the region in the early 18th century. Montvale's early economy was primarily agricultural, with apple orchards and dairy farms dotting the landscape.

With the arrival of the railroad in the 1870s, Montvale began to transform. The New Jersey and New York Railroad provided a direct link to New York City, which spurred development and made Montvale an attractive location for commuters. The 20th century saw further growth as residential neighborhoods expanded and businesses began to establish themselves in the area.

Today, Montvale is known for its excellent schools, beautiful parks, and a strong sense of community. Its history is preserved in landmarks such as the Montvale Train Station and the historic homes that still stand as a testament to the borough's past. For residents and those considering making Montvale their home, the borough offers a blend of historical charm and modern convenience, making it a unique and desirable place to live in New Jersey.
