History of Montclair

By Betsy Burlingame

Summary: A short history of Montclair is provided below for residents and anyone considering moving there.

Montclair, New Jersey, is a vibrant suburban township in Essex County with a rich history that adds to its unique charm. Originally part of the Native American trail network, the area was first settled by Europeans in 1666 when Connecticut Puritans led by Robert Treat bought land from the Lenape tribe. The community, initially part of Newark, grew slowly as a rural agricultural town.

In the 1800s, Montclair's fate changed with the arrival of the railroad, which transformed it into a desirable suburban retreat for wealthy New Yorkers. The township's picturesque landscapes, designed by the renowned landscape architect Frederick Law Olmsted, who co-designed Central Park, attracted affluent residents who built grand Victorian mansions, many of which still stand today.

Montclair was officially incorporated as a township in 1868, separating from Bloomfield. Throughout the 20th century, it became known for its diverse population, progressive values, and cultural attractions, including the Montclair Art Museum and the Wellmont Theater. The township has also been home to notable figures, such as writer Stephen Crane and actress Olympia Dukakis.

Today, Montclair is celebrated for its rich cultural scene, excellent schools, and community engagement, making it an attractive place for families and individuals alike. Its history is not just preserved in its architecture and museums but also in the community spirit that continues to thrive among its residents.

For those living in or considering a move to Montclair, the township offers a unique blend of historical charm and modern living, making it a jewel in the crown of Essex County.
