History of Massapequa

By Joshua Wood, LPC

Summary: Whether you're considering moving to Massapequa or are already below, here is a short history to help you understand how it has evolved into the place it is today.

Massapequa, a hamlet within the town of Oyster Bay in Nassau County, New York, has a rich history that dates back to the pre-colonial era. Originally inhabited by the Native American Massapequa tribe, the area was known for its abundant natural resources and scenic beauty. The name "Massapequa" itself is believed to be derived from a Native American word meaning "great water land."

European settlement in the area began in the 17th century when the Dutch and English colonists arrived. The land was primarily used for farming and fishing, with the Massapequa Creek serving as an essential resource for the settlers. Over time, the community grew, and by the 19th century, Massapequa had become a notable stop on the South Shore of Long Island, with the arrival of the South Oyster Bay Railroad in 1867 further boosting its development.

The 20th century saw Massapequa transform from a rural outpost to a bustling suburb, especially after World War II when there was a housing boom. The famous Levittown development, which is often cited as the archetype of post-war suburbs, is located just to the west of Massapequa. This period marked the construction of many homes and the influx of families, leading to the establishment of schools, parks, and local businesses that catered to the growing population.

Today, Massapequa is known for its strong community ties, excellent schools, and beautiful parks, including the Massapequa Preserve, which offers miles of bike paths and walking trails. Its history is preserved in landmarks such as the Old Grace Church and the Massapequa Historical Society, which keep the spirit of the past alive for residents and newcomers alike.
