History of Madison

By Joshua Wood, LPC

Summary: It's helpful for people considering moving to Madison to understand it's history and how it has developed into the community it is today.

Madison, Connecticut, a charming coastal town in New Haven County, boasts a rich history that dates back to the early 17th century. Originally inhabited by the Hammonasset people, the area was first settled by Europeans in 1639 when it was purchased from the Native Americans by English colonists. It was initially part of the larger settlement of Guilford, but by 1707, it had grown enough to become its own parish, named for the English bishop James Madison.

Madison's early economy was primarily agricultural, with its fertile land yielding crops that supported both local needs and trade. The town's location along the Long Island Sound also facilitated a thriving maritime industry. Shipbuilding and coastal trade became significant contributors to Madison's growth throughout the 18th and 19th centuries.

In 1826, Madison officially separated from Guilford and was incorporated as an independent town. It was named after President James Madison, reflecting the patriotic fervor of the era. The 19th century saw the rise of Madison's summer resort community, as its beautiful beaches and rural charm attracted visitors from cities like New Haven and New York. This led to the development of grand hotels and the establishment of summer homes along the shoreline.

Today, Madison is known for its picturesque landscapes, historic town center, and high quality of life. It has preserved much of its historic architecture, including the Allis-Bushnell House and the Deacon John Grave House, which provide residents and visitors a glimpse into the town's storied past. With its commitment to education, community, and conservation, Madison continues to be a desirable place to live, rich in history and natural beauty.
