History of Lyndhurst
Summary: It's helpful for people considering moving to Lyndhurst to understand it's history and how it has developed into the community it is today.
Lyndhurst, New Jersey, is a township with a rich history that dates back to the early days of America. Originally part of the New Barbadoes Township, which was established in 1693, Lyndhurst was later formed as Union Township on February 19, 1852, from portions of Harrison Township. However, due to confusion with another Union Township in Hunterdon County, it was renamed to Lyndhurst in 1917.
The area that is now Lyndhurst was once a part of the land that the Native American tribe, the Lenape, inhabited. European settlers arrived in the 17th century, and the region became a site for mills and farms. The development of the Kingsland train station in 1856, named after the Kingsland family who owned a significant portion of the local land, spurred further growth.
During the 19th century, Lyndhurst experienced industrial growth, particularly with the establishment of the Clark Thread Company, which became one of the largest employers in the area. The township's location near the Passaic River was advantageous for manufacturing and transportation.
Today, Lyndhurst is a suburban community with a population of approximately 22,000 residents. It offers a blend of residential areas, parks, and commercial enterprises. The township is known for its excellent schools, community services, and convenient access to New York City, making it an attractive place for families and individuals looking to settle in a historically rich and vibrant community.
For those living in or considering a move to Lyndhurst, the township's history is a testament to its resilience and adaptability, shaping it into the welcoming community it is today.
