History of Lynbrook

By Joshua Wood, LPC

Summary: A short history of Lynbrook is provided below for residents and anyone considering moving there.

Lynbrook, a charming village in Nassau County, Long Island, has a rich history that dates back to the early 19th century. Originally part of the sprawling Hempstead Plains, the area that would become Lynbrook was first settled around 1810. It was known as "Pearsall's Corners," after the Pearsall family, who were among the first settlers. Over time, the name changed to "Bloomfield" and later to "Near Rockville," reflecting its proximity to the neighboring village of Rockville Centre.

The arrival of the South Side Railroad in 1867 transformed the community, making it more accessible and spurring growth. In 1894, residents decided to incorporate the village, choosing the name "Lynbrook" as an anagram of "Brooklyn," from which many of the village's residents had migrated. This new name was a nod to the area's connection to the larger city while establishing its own identity.

Throughout the 20th century, Lynbrook continued to develop as a residential community, with a small-town feel that attracted families and businesses alike. Its proximity to New York City made it an ideal location for commuters, contributing to its growth and prosperity. Today, Lynbrook is known for its excellent schools, diverse housing options, and a vibrant downtown area, making it an appealing destination for those looking to live in a suburban setting with urban conveniences.

For residents and potential newcomers, Lynbrook's history is a testament to its enduring appeal as a place of community, progress, and tradition. Its historical roots continue to shape its character, offering a unique blend of the past and present for all who call it home.
