History of Long Branch

By Joshua Wood, LPC

Summary: Here is a brief history of Long Branch for both residents, viistors, or anyone considering moving there.

Long Branch, a coastal city in Monmouth County, New Jersey, boasts a rich history that dates back to the colonial era. Originally formed as a beach resort town in the late 18th century, it became a popular destination for affluent visitors, including seven US Presidents, earning it the nickname "The Nation's Summer Capital." The city's name is said to have been inspired by the "long branch" of the Shrewsbury River.

In the 19th century, Long Branch's reputation as a luxurious escape was solidified with the construction of grand hotels and Victorian mansions. The New York elite, including famous names like Diamond Jim Brady and Lily Langtry, frequented its shores. The United States Hotel, one of the largest in the world at the time, was a centerpiece of the city's glamour until it burned down in 1865.

The city's fortunes waned with the advent of the automobile and the Great Depression, as tourists sought out more distant destinations. However, Long Branch reinvented itself, particularly with the development of Pier Village, a mixed-use community that has revitalized the oceanfront with shops, restaurants, and residences.

Today, Long Branch is a vibrant community that honors its historical roots while embracing modern living. Residents and potential newcomers can enjoy the city's beautiful beaches, cultural diversity, and ongoing redevelopment, which make it an attractive place to live, work, and play.
