History of Lambertville

By Betsy Burlingame

Summary: Whether you're considering moving to Lambertville or are already below, here is a short history to help you understand how it has evolved into the place it is today.

Lambertville, nestled along the Delaware River in Hunterdon County, boasts a rich history that dates back to the early 18th century. Originally known as Coryell's Ferry, after the owner of the ferry service, Emanuel Coryell, the town served as a pivotal crossing point between New Jersey and Pennsylvania. The ferry operated until 1814 when the construction of the first bridge connecting Lambertville to New Hope, Pennsylvania, was completed.

The town was officially renamed Lambertville in 1810, in honor of John Lambert, a local resident who served as a United States Senator and acting Governor of New Jersey. Lambertville flourished in the 19th century, becoming a hub for transportation and industry. The Delaware and Raritan Canal, completed in 1834, played a significant role in the town's development, facilitating the transport of coal and other goods. The canal's presence attracted various industries, including rubber, paper, and ceramics, which bolstered the local economy and shaped the community.

By the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Lambertville's industrial prominence began to wane, but the town found new life as a center for art, culture, and tourism. Today, Lambertville is known for its well-preserved Victorian architecture, vibrant arts scene, antique shops, and annual events like the Shad Festival. Its historical charm and scenic beauty continue to draw visitors and those seeking a unique place to call home.

For residents and those considering a move to Lambertville, the town's history is a tapestry of American progress and transformation, offering a quaint yet dynamic setting for modern living.
