History of Kings Park

By Betsy Burlingame

Summary: A short history of Kings Park is provided below for residents and anyone considering moving there.

Kings Park, a hamlet in the Town of Smithtown in Suffolk County, New York, has a rich history that dates back to the late 19th century. Originally known as St. Johnland, the area was founded by Reverend Dr. William Augustus Muhlenberg in 1866 as a community for the elderly, orphans, and the mentally ill. The name was later changed to Kings Park in honor of the King family, who were original settlers in the region.

The community grew significantly with the establishment of the Kings Park Psychiatric Center in 1885. The center became a major employer and contributed to the area's development, including the creation of a railroad station for transporting patients and supplies. The psychiatric center's presence influenced the local economy and culture for over a century until its closure in the late 1990s.

Today, Kings Park is known for its small-town charm, community spirit, and beautiful parks, such as the Sunken Meadow State Park and Nissequogue River State Park. The hamlet boasts a rich blend of residential neighborhoods, local businesses, and recreational facilities, making it an attractive place for families and individuals alike.

Residents and potential newcomers to Kings Park can enjoy a variety of annual events, such as the Kings Park Day festival and the St. Patrick's Day Parade, which celebrate the community's heritage and tight-knit atmosphere. With its historical roots and modern amenities, Kings Park continues to be a desirable destination for those seeking a blend of suburban tranquility and historical charm.
