History of Kearny

By Betsy Burlingame

Summary: Whether you're considering moving to Kearny or are already below, here is a short history to help you understand how it has evolved into the place it is today.

Kearny, New Jersey, is a town with a rich history that dates back to the colonial era. Originally part of the New Barbadoes Township, Kearny was settled by Scottish immigrants in the late 17th century. The town was named after General Philip Kearny, a local resident and a hero of the Mexican-American War and the Civil War.

During the Industrial Revolution, Kearny became a manufacturing hub due to its proximity to the Passaic River and Newark Bay. The town's industry was further boosted in 1875 when the Clark Thread Company of Paisley, Scotland, opened a large mill in Kearny, bringing a significant number of jobs and immigrants, particularly from Scotland and Ireland, to the area.

Kearny's industrial base expanded with the establishment of the Kearny Yards during World War I, which became a major shipbuilding facility. The town's strategic location made it an industrial powerhouse, contributing to the war effort and providing employment for thousands of residents.

In the post-war years, Kearny continued to thrive as a center of manufacturing and commerce. However, like many American towns, Kearny faced challenges as industries declined and moved away. Despite this, the town has maintained a strong sense of community and has seen a resurgence in recent years, with new businesses and residents moving in.

Today, Kearny is known for its diverse population, historical landmarks, and community events. Its rich history is celebrated by residents and is an integral part of the town's identity, making it an attractive place for those looking to connect with America's industrial past while enjoying the benefits of a close-knit community.
