History of Irvington

By Joshua Wood, LPC

Summary: A short history of Irvington is provided below for residents and anyone considering moving there.

Irvington, New York, is a charming village within the town of Greenburgh in Westchester County, known for its rich history and picturesque setting along the Hudson River. Named after the famous author Washington Irving, who lived nearby, Irvington offers a blend of historical allure and modern living.

The area that is now Irvington was originally inhabited by the Weckquaesgeek Native Americans, a branch of the Mohican tribe. European settlers, primarily from the Netherlands, began to arrive in the 17th century. The village was initially part of the Manor of Philipsburg, a vast colonial estate.

In the 19th century, the arrival of the Hudson River Railroad transformed Irvington into an accessible location for wealthy New Yorkers seeking country estates. The village officially incorporated in 1872, and its character shifted from rural farmland to a suburban community.

Irvington's historical significance is evident in its well-preserved architecture, including the Octagon House, a unique 1860 residence, and the Armour-Stiner House, a prime example of an octagonal, domed Victorian home. Sunnyside, the romantic Gothic Revival home of Washington Irving, remains a national historic landmark.

Today, Irvington balances its historical heritage with contemporary amenities. Its excellent schools, scenic parks, and a vibrant downtown area make it an attractive place for residents and visitors alike. The village's commitment to preserving its past while fostering a sense of community continues to define its unique character.

Whether you're a history buff, nature lover, or simply seeking a peaceful suburban life close to New York City, Irvington offers a small-town feel with a storied past that continues to enchant those who stroll its quiet, tree-lined streets.
