History of Huntington

By Joshua Wood, LPC

Summary: Here is a brief history of Huntington for both residents, viistors, or anyone considering moving there.

Located on the north shore of Long Island, Huntington is a town with a rich history that dates back to the 17th century. It was first settled by Europeans in 1653, when a group of Englishmen led by Richard Holbrook, Robert Williams, and Daniel Whitehead obtained a deed from the Matinecock tribe for a parcel of land. This land now comprises the heart of modern Huntington.

Throughout the colonial period, Huntington was primarily an agricultural community, with its residents living off the fertile land. The town played a notable role during the American Revolution. It was occupied by British forces, and the local residents were divided in their loyalties, with some supporting independence while others remained loyal to the Crown.

With the advent of the railroad in the 19th century, Huntington began to transform. The ease of transportation facilitated the growth of commerce and industry. In the 20th century, the town saw a significant population increase as it became a suburban community for New York City, offering a picturesque setting away from the urban hustle.

Today, Huntington is known for its vibrant downtown, cultural institutions like the Paramount Theater, and its beautiful parks and beaches. It has a diverse population and offers a high quality of life with a blend of historic charm and modern amenities. For those living in or considering a move to Huntington, the town's history is a testament to its resilience and adaptability, promising a community that honors its past while looking forward to the future.
