History of Hicksville
Summary: Here is a brief history of Hicksville for both residents, viistors, or anyone considering moving there.
Hicksville, a hamlet and census-designated place within the Town of Oyster Bay in Nassau County, has a rich history that dates back to the early 19th century. The area was originally settled by Valentine Hicks, the son-in-law of nationally renowned Quaker abolitionist and minister Elias Hicks, and a future president of the Long Island Rail Road. In 1834, Valentine Hicks bought land in the village and turned it into a station stop on the LIRR in 1837, which was the catalyst for Hicksville's growth.
The arrival of the railroad brought more settlers and an economic boom to the area. Agriculture, particularly potato and cucumber farming, flourished, and Hicksville became a bustling produce center. The mid-20th century saw a shift from agriculture to suburban development, as many soldiers returning from World War II sought homes for their families. This led to a population surge and the transformation of Hicksville into a suburban community.
Today, Hicksville is known for its diverse population and vibrant community life. It boasts a variety of shopping and dining options, including the Broadway Mall, one of the largest shopping centers on Long Island. The Hicksville Gregory Museum, housed in the historic Heitz Place Courthouse, offers residents and visitors a glimpse into the area's past. With its rich history and ongoing development, Hicksville continues to be an attractive destination for residents and newcomers alike.
