History of Hawthorne

By Joshua Wood, LPC

Summary: A short history of Hawthorne is provided below for residents and anyone considering moving there.

Hawthorne, New York, is a hamlet within the town of Mount Pleasant in Westchester County, with a rich history that dates back to the colonial era. Originally inhabited by the Mohegan tribe, the area was later settled by Dutch and English colonists. The hamlet was initially known as Hammond's Mills and later as Unionville, reflecting its early American roots.

The arrival of the New York Central Railroad in the 19th century marked a significant turning point for Hawthorne. The improved transportation led to increased industrial and residential development. The hamlet was renamed Hawthorne in honor of the famous American novelist Nathaniel Hawthorne in 1901, following a train accident that prompted the need to distinguish it from a similarly named town.

In the 20th century, Hawthorne continued to grow, with the establishment of the Hawthorne Cedar Knolls School and the founding of the Rose Hawthorne Lathrop Home for Incurables, now known as Rosary Hill Home, which was started by the daughter of Nathaniel Hawthorne. These institutions played a significant role in shaping the community's identity.

Today, Hawthorne is known for its suburban charm, excellent schools, and convenient access to New York City, making it an attractive place for families and professionals. Its history is preserved in the well-maintained Victorian homes and the pride of its residents, who value their community's unique heritage.

Whether you're a long-time resident or considering a move to Hawthorne, the hamlet's history is a testament to its resilience and adaptability, offering a blend of historical richness and modern convenience.
