History of Hawthorne

By Betsy Burlingame

Summary: Whether you're considering moving to Hawthorne or are already below, here is a short history to help you understand how it has evolved into the place it is today.

Hawthorne, New Jersey, is a borough with a rich history that dates back to its incorporation on March 24, 1898. Before its establishment, the area was part of the Manchester Township and was known for its sprawling farms and mills. The town was named after the famous American writer Nathaniel Hawthorne, reflecting a common practice of the era to honor literary figures.

The early 20th century saw Hawthorne evolve from a rural community into a more suburban one, with the arrival of the Paterson and Hamburg Turnpike (now Route 208) and the development of various industries. The industrial growth attracted a diverse workforce and contributed to the population increase. Notably, the Diamond Bridge Avenue was a hub for several industries, including the textile and chemical sectors.

Throughout the years, Hawthorne has maintained a balance between residential life and industrial activity. The borough has a strong sense of community, with many local businesses and family-friendly events that foster a tight-knit atmosphere. The town's commitment to preserving its history is evident in landmarks such as the Hawthorne Historical Society and the Louis Bay 2nd Library and Community Center, which serve as cultural touchstones for residents and visitors alike.

Today, Hawthorne continues to attract residents with its small-town charm, proximity to New York City, and its dedication to community values. Its history is a testament to the resilience and adaptability of a town that has grown and thrived over more than a century.
