History of Harwinton

By Joshua Wood, LPC

Summary: A short history of Harwinton is provided below for residents and anyone considering moving there.

Harwinton, a charming town in Litchfield County, Connecticut, has a rich history that dates back to its founding in 1737. Originally part of the colony of Connecticut, Harwinton was named after the English towns of Hartford and Windsor, reflecting the heritage of its early settlers. The town's name is a portmanteau, combining "Hartford" and "Wintonbury," an area now known as Bloomfield.

Throughout the 18th and 19th centuries, Harwinton was primarily an agricultural community, with many residents engaged in farming. The town's landscape, characterized by rolling hills and fertile valleys, was well-suited for such endeavors. As the Industrial Revolution took hold, small mills and factories began to emerge, harnessing the power of the area's rivers and streams.

Despite these developments, Harwinton has largely retained its rural character. It has managed to preserve much of its historical architecture, including the Harwinton Congregational Church, which was established in the early years of the town and still stands as a testament to the community's enduring spirit.

Today, Harwinton is known for its peaceful residential life, scenic beauty, and strong sense of community. It offers a blend of historical charm and modern amenities, making it an attractive place for those looking to settle in a quiet, yet connected, rural town. With a commitment to preserving its past while looking towards the future, Harwinton continues to be a beloved home to its residents and a welcoming destination for newcomers.
