History of Hartsdale
Summary: It's helpful for people considering moving to Hartsdale to understand it's history and how it has developed into the community it is today.
Hartsdale, a hamlet in the town of Greenburgh, Westchester County, New York, has a rich history that dates back to the early days of American colonization. The area, originally inhabited by the Weckquaeskeck tribe, a subset of the Mohican tribe of the Algonquin nation, began to change with the arrival of European settlers in the 17th century.
In 1682, the land that would become Hartsdale was part of a large tract purchased by Frederick Philipse, a wealthy Dutch merchant. The area was part of Philipsburg Manor, and Hartsdale itself was named after the Hart family, who settled there in the 18th century. The Harts' farmstead in the area eventually gave the community its name.
The arrival of the New York and Harlem Railroad in the 19th century transformed Hartsdale from a quiet farming area into a more accessible and desirable residential community. The railroad provided an easy commute to New York City, attracting city dwellers looking for a suburban lifestyle.
In the 20th century, Hartsdale continued to grow, maintaining its reputation as a peaceful suburban enclave. It is known for having the first pet cemetery in the United States, established in 1896, and for being the location of the world's first Carvel Ice Cream store.
Today, Hartsdale is a vibrant community that cherishes its historical roots while embracing the conveniences of modern suburban living. Its residents enjoy a variety of local amenities, including shopping, dining, and access to beautiful parks. With its rich history and welcoming atmosphere, Hartsdale remains a popular choice for those looking to live in Westchester County.
