History of Groton
Summary: Whether you're considering moving to Groton or are already below, here is a short history to help you understand how it has evolved into the place it is today.
Groton, Connecticut, a town rich in history and charm, is nestled along the Thames River in New London County. Established in 1705, when it separated from New London, Groton has played a significant role in American history, particularly during the Revolutionary War. The town is perhaps best known for the Battle of Groton Heights, which took place on September 6, 1781, when British forces, led by Benedict Arnold, attacked and captured the fort, leading to the infamous Fort Griswold massacre.
In the 19th century, Groton's coastal location made it a hub for shipbuilding and maritime trade. The establishment of the Groton & Stonington Street Railway in 1904 further boosted the local economy by connecting Groton to other communities. The town's maritime legacy continued into the 20th century with the founding of the Electric Boat Corporation in 1899, which became a major submarine producer and is still in operation today as a division of General Dynamics.
The presence of the U.S. Naval Submarine Base, commissioned in 1916, has also been central to Groton's identity and economy. It is the home port for many of the Navy's submarines and the site of the prestigious Naval Submarine School. Groton's commitment to its naval and maritime heritage is evident in attractions like the Submarine Force Library and Museum, which houses the historic USS Nautilus, the world's first operational nuclear-powered submarine.
Today, Groton offers residents and newcomers a blend of historical sites, natural beauty, and a strong sense of community. Its strategic location, excellent schools, and diverse cultural and recreational opportunities make it an attractive place to live, work, and explore.
