History of Great River

By Betsy Burlingame

Summary: Here is a brief history of Great River for both residents, viistors, or anyone considering moving there.

Great River is a hamlet located on the South Shore of Long Island in the Town of Islip, Suffolk County, New York. Its history is rich and deeply intertwined with the development of Long Island itself. Originally inhabited by the Secatogue tribe of the Algonquin peoples, the area was later settled by European colonists in the 17th century.

The hamlet's name, Great River, reflects the significant waterway, the Connetquot River, which runs through the area. This river was a critical resource for both Native Americans and early settlers, providing a means for transportation, fishing, and milling operations. In the 19th century, the region became known for its grand estates and was a favored spot for wealthy families from New York City seeking a country retreat. One of the most notable estates was the 300-acre "Meadow Edge" owned by the wealthy industrialist William Bayard Cutting in 1886, which is now the Bayard Cutting Arboretum State Park.

Throughout the 20th century, Great River evolved from a rural enclave into a suburban community. The hamlet has maintained much of its natural beauty and historical charm, with many of its grand homes and estates preserved amidst modern development. Today, Great River is known for its excellent schools, beautiful parks, and a strong sense of community, making it an attractive place for both residents and those considering a move to the area.

For those interested in the history of Great River, the local library and historical society offer resources and events that delve into the hamlet's past, celebrating its heritage and the contributions of its residents over the centuries.
