History of Glastonbury

By Joshua Wood, LPC

Summary: It's helpful for people considering moving to Glastonbury to understand it's history and how it has developed into the community it is today.

Glastonbury, Connecticut, with its rich history and charming New England character, has long been a desirable place to live. The town's origins date back to 1636 when it was part of Wethersfield, one of Connecticut's oldest settlements. Initially known as "Naubuc Farms," it was used by Wethersfield residents as a place to pasture their cattle. By 1693, the area had grown sufficiently to be incorporated as its own town, named after Glastonbury in Somerset, England.

Throughout the 18th and 19th centuries, Glastonbury evolved from its agricultural roots into a hub of shipbuilding and industry, thanks to its location along the Connecticut River. The town's shipyards were known for constructing sea vessels that sailed across the globe. Additionally, Glastonbury became known for its J.B. Williams Soap Factory, the first company in the world to manufacture soap using the process of saponification.

In the 20th century, Glastonbury transitioned from its industrial past to a more suburban community, attracting residents with its picturesque landscapes, quality schools, and proximity to Hartford. Today, Glastonbury honors its history through well-preserved historic sites such as the Glastonbury-Rocky Hill Ferry, the oldest continuously operating ferry in the United States, and the Welles-Shipman-Ward House, a testament to the town's colonial heritage.

For those living in or considering a move to Glastonbury, the town offers a blend of historical charm and modern amenities, making it a unique and inviting place to call home.
