History of Flemington

By Betsy Burlingame

Summary: It's helpful for people considering moving to Flemington to understand it's history and how it has developed into the community it is today.

Flemington, New Jersey, is a borough rich in history and charm, nestled in Hunterdon County. Its roots date back to the 18th century when the land was owned by Samuel Fleming, for whom the town was eventually named. In 1785, Flemington was officially recognized as a town, and by 1910, it was incorporated as a borough.

The town's early economy thrived on agriculture and the presence of mills, which benefited from the region's fertile soil and waterways. Flemington's Main Street began to flourish in the 19th century, with the arrival of the railroad in 1856, which connected it to larger markets and spurred further growth.

One of the most notable events in Flemington's history was the 1935 trial of Bruno Hauptmann, accused of kidnapping and murdering the Lindbergh baby. The "Trial of the Century" brought international attention to the small town, with reporters flocking to the Hunterdon County Courthouse, a historic site still standing today.

Today, Flemington maintains its historical charm while evolving into a vibrant community. Residents and visitors enjoy a blend of old and new, with historic sites like the Doric House, the Fleming Castle, and the Union Hotel standing alongside contemporary shops, restaurants, and services. The borough's commitment to preserving its past while embracing the future makes it an appealing destination for those looking to live in a place with a strong sense of identity and community.

Whether you're a history buff, a lover of small-town life, or someone seeking a tight-knit community, Flemington offers a unique blend of past and present, making it a special place to call home.
