History of Fairfield

By Betsy Burlingame

Summary: Whether you're considering moving to Fairfield or are already below, here is a short history to help you understand how it has evolved into the place it is today.

Fairfield, Connecticut, is a town steeped in a rich history that dates back to the early 17th century. Established in 1639 by English colonists, Fairfield is one of the oldest communities in the state. The town was named for its "fair fields" and fertile land, which made it an attractive area for settlers.

Throughout the 18th century, Fairfield grew as a center of agriculture and trade. However, during the American Revolution, the town suffered significant losses. In 1779, British forces under General William Tryon raided the town, burning most of the buildings in what is known as the "Burning of Fairfield." Despite this setback, the resilient community rebuilt and continued to prosper in the post-war years.

The 19th century saw Fairfield evolve with the advent of the railroad, which connected the town to New York City and beyond, spurring economic growth and making it an attractive suburban community. The town's picturesque landscape, coastal location, and quality of life drew residents who sought a respite from city life.

Today, Fairfield is known for its excellent schools, beautiful beaches, and vibrant cultural scene. It is home to two universities, Fairfield University and Sacred Heart University, which contribute to the town's educational and cultural offerings. With a rich past and a dynamic present, Fairfield continues to be a desirable place to live, offering a unique blend of historical charm and modern amenities to its residents and newcomers alike.
