History of Essex

By Joshua Wood, LPC

Summary: It's helpful for people considering moving to Essex to understand it's history and how it has developed into the community it is today.

Essex, Connecticut, nestled in the heart of Middlesex County, is a community steeped in a rich history that dates back to the early days of American settlement. Originally inhabited by the indigenous Wangunk people, the area was later settled by Europeans in 1648 as part of the Saybrook Colony under the name "Potapoug." It was not until 1852 that Essex became incorporated as a distinct town, deriving its name from the county in England.

The town's strategic location along the Connecticut River played a significant role in its development. During the 18th and 19th centuries, Essex emerged as a bustling maritime hub, with shipbuilding becoming the cornerstone of its economy. The town's shipyards produced a wide array of vessels, from schooners to brigs, contributing to both commercial trade and military efforts, particularly during the War of 1812.

One of the most notable events in Essex's history is the British raid during the War of 1812, known as the "Burning of the Ships." In 1814, British forces attacked the town and set ablaze over two dozen ships, marking it as one of the largest maritime losses in U.S. history. Despite this setback, the town's resilient spirit led to a swift recovery and continued prosperity in shipbuilding.

Today, Essex retains much of its historical charm, with well-preserved architecture and the Connecticut River Museum, which showcases the town's maritime heritage. Residents and newcomers alike are drawn to its picturesque landscapes, vibrant cultural scene, and community-oriented lifestyle, making Essex not just a place of historical significance, but a beloved home to those who reside there.
