History of Enfield

By Betsy Burlingame

Summary: Here is a brief history of Enfield for both residents, viistors, or anyone considering moving there.

Enfield, Connecticut, with its rich history and charming character, is a town that offers a glimpse into New England's past while providing the amenities of modern living. Established in 1683, Enfield was originally part of Massachusetts until it was annexed to Connecticut in 1749, a move that was driven by a desire for closer governance. The town's name is believed to have been inspired by Enfield Town in Middlesex, England.

During the 18th and 19th centuries, Enfield experienced significant growth due to its fertile land along the Connecticut River, which was ideal for tobacco farming. This agricultural prosperity laid the foundation for the community's early economy. The town also played a role in the American Revolutionary War, with local militias participating in various battles.

The industrial revolution brought further development to Enfield, with the establishment of the Enfield Falls Canal in the early 19th century. This canal helped bypass the rapids in the Connecticut River, facilitating trade and transport. The town also saw the rise of carpet and gunpowder industries, with the Hazard Powder Company becoming a notable employer and a key supplier of gunpowder during the Civil War.

Today, Enfield maintains its historical charm while evolving into a suburban community with diverse housing, good schools, and a strong sense of community. Its proximity to Springfield, Massachusetts, and Hartford, Connecticut, makes it an attractive location for those who wish to enjoy a quieter lifestyle while having access to urban conveniences. Whether you're a history buff, a nature lover, or someone seeking a family-friendly town, Enfield offers a unique blend of past and present for residents and newcomers alike.
