History of Eastchester

By Joshua Wood, LPC

Summary: It's helpful for people considering moving to Eastchester to understand it's history and how it has developed into the community it is today.

Eastchester, a town in Westchester County, New York, has a rich history that dates back to the colonial era. The town was officially established in 1664 when ten families from Fairfield, Connecticut, received a land grant from the English. These families were led by Anne Hutchinson, a notable figure in colonial America known for her strong religious convictions and for challenging the Puritan orthodoxy.

The town's name, Eastchester, is believed to have been derived from the East Town (Eastchester) in England, reflecting the origins of some of its early settlers. Throughout the 17th and 18th centuries, Eastchester was primarily an agricultural community, with many of its residents involved in farming.

During the American Revolution, Eastchester played a modest role, with several skirmishes and events occurring within its boundaries. The town's growth accelerated in the 19th century with the arrival of the railroad, which made it more accessible to New York City, leading to its development as a suburban community.

In the 20th century, Eastchester continued to grow and evolve, with the establishment of residential neighborhoods, schools, and local businesses. Today, Eastchester is known for its excellent schools, close-knit community, and rich historical heritage, making it an attractive place for both residents and those considering moving to the area. Its blend of suburban charm and historical depth offers a unique living experience in Westchester County.
