History of East Granby
Summary: Here is a brief history of East Granby for both residents, viistors, or anyone considering moving there.
East Granby, Connecticut, is a charming small town with a rich history that dates back to the early 17th century. Originally part of Windsor, the area that is now East Granby was first settled by Europeans in 1664. It was known as the "Turkey Hills" due to the large flocks of wild turkeys that roamed the hills. Over time, the community grew, and in 1736, it was recognized as the parish of Turkey Hills.
In 1786, the parish separated from Windsor and was incorporated as the town of Granby. However, the northern part of Granby, which was less populated and more rural, had distinct needs. This led to a division, and in 1858, East Granby was incorporated as a separate town. The new town's economy was primarily agricultural, with tobacco becoming a significant crop. The presence of the Farmington Canal and later the railroad helped to boost the local economy by facilitating trade and transportation.
Throughout the 19th and 20th centuries, East Granby maintained its rural character, with a slow but steady growth in population. Today, East Granby is known for its excellent quality of life, good schools, and strong sense of community. Its historical legacy is preserved in several historic sites, including the Old Newgate Prison, which served as a colonial jail and later as a copper mine, and is now a state historical site.
For those living in or considering a move to East Granby, the town offers a blend of historical charm and modern amenities, making it a unique and inviting place to call home.
