History of Cromwell
Summary: Here is a brief history of Cromwell for both residents, viistors, or anyone considering moving there.
For residents and prospective newcomers, Cromwell, Connecticut, boasts a rich history that dates back to the mid-17th century. Originally known as the Upper Houses, a reference to the upper reaches of the Mattabesset River, Cromwell was once part of Middletown, settled in 1651. It wasn't until 1851 that Cromwell officially became its own town, named in honor of Oliver Cromwell, the English military and political leader.
The town's location along the Connecticut River contributed significantly to its early economy, with shipbuilding and manufacturing playing central roles. During the 19th century, Cromwell saw the rise of several industries, including the manufacture of textiles and the production of firearms. The arrival of the Middletown and Portland Railroad in 1872 further boosted the local economy by improving transportation of goods and people.
Today, Cromwell maintains a blend of its historical roots and modern development. The town is known for its excellent schools, community spirit, and the annual Travelers Championship golf tournament held at the TPC River Highlands. Its convenient location in the center of the state, with easy access to major highways, makes it an attractive place for families and businesses alike.
As Cromwell continues to grow and evolve, it remains a town deeply connected to its past, offering a unique charm that is appreciated by its residents and the many visitors who come to experience its small-town appeal amidst the backdrop of Connecticut's natural beauty.
