History of Cresskill
Summary: Here is a brief history of Cresskill for both residents, viistors, or anyone considering moving there.
Cresskill, New Jersey, is a borough with a rich history that dates back to its early settlement in the 17th century. The name "Cresskill" derives from "cress," referring to the watercress that grew in the streams and "kill," a Dutch word for stream, which were abundant in the area. This picturesque borough, located in Bergen County, has evolved from its humble beginnings into a charming and vibrant community.
The area that is now Cresskill was originally inhabited by the Lenape Native Americans. European settlers, primarily Dutch, began to establish homesteads in the region in the 18th century. During the American Revolutionary War, Cresskill played a role as part of the battlegrounds and was near the site of the historic campgrounds of the Continental Army, known as Camp Merritt. A monument now stands at the crossroads of Madison Avenue and Knickerbocker Road to commemorate the soldiers who passed through during World War I.
Cresskill was officially incorporated as a borough in 1894, and since then, it has grown steadily. The 20th century saw significant residential development, transforming Cresskill into a suburban haven for those working in New York City and seeking a peaceful community to call home. Today, Cresskill boasts excellent schools, a variety of local businesses, and a strong sense of community, making it an attractive place for families and individuals alike.
Residents and potential newcomers to Cresskill can enjoy the borough's historical charm, community events, and the natural beauty of its parks and tree-lined streets. With its deep historical roots and commitment to maintaining a high quality of life, Cresskill continues to be a desirable destination in the heart of Bergen County.
