History of Bedminster

By Joshua Wood, LPC

Summary: Whether you're considering moving to Bedminster or are already below, here is a short history to help you understand how it has evolved into the place it is today.

Bedminster, New Jersey, is a township with a rich history that dates back to America's colonial period. Nestled in Somerset County, it was originally settled by Dutch, Germans, and Scots-Irish immigrants in the 18th century. The name Bedminster is derived from the name of the then proprietor of the colony, Michael Van Bedminster.

The area was primarily agricultural, with many large farms and estates established by wealthy landowners. During the Revolutionary War, Bedminster's location made it a crossroads for troops, and it witnessed various military movements. The Pluckemin Continental Artillery Cantonment Site, where General Henry Knox oversaw the winter encampment of the Continental Artillery, is one of the significant historical sites in the township.

Post-independence, Bedminster continued to thrive as a rural community. The township was officially incorporated in 1749, and over time, it evolved with the construction of roads, schools, and churches. The coming of the railroad in the 19th century brought new economic opportunities and growth.

In the 20th century, Bedminster saw a transformation as large estates were subdivided into smaller parcels, leading to residential development. Today, Bedminster is known for its blend of historical charm and modern amenities, attracting those who appreciate its rural character, open spaces, and proximity to New York City. The township is also home to the Trump National Golf Club, adding to its notoriety and prestige.

For residents and those considering moving to Bedminster, the township offers a unique glimpse into America's past while providing a peaceful and high-quality lifestyle in the present.
