History of Bedford

By Joshua Wood, LPC

Summary: Here is a brief history of Bedford for both residents, viistors, or anyone considering moving there.

Bedford, New York, is a town with a rich history that dates back to the founding of America. Established in 1680 when 22 Puritans from Stamford, Connecticut, purchased land from the local Native American tribe, the town has grown from a humble farming community into a picturesque suburb of New York City.

During the Revolutionary War, Bedford was a significant military base for the Continental Army. The Bedford Flag, believed to be the oldest known battle flag in the United States, was carried by the Bedford Minutemen in 1775. The town was burned by the British in 1779 but was rebuilt and continued to prosper in the post-war period.

In the 19th century, Bedford's rural charm began to attract wealthy New Yorkers who built large country estates. This trend continued into the 20th century, with the town becoming a haven for celebrities and notable figures seeking privacy and tranquility within commuting distance of the city.

Today, Bedford maintains its historical character through careful preservation of its landmarks, such as the 1787 Court House and Bedford Village Historic District. The town offers a blend of colonial heritage and modern living, with a strong sense of community and a commitment to conservation. Its excellent schools, scenic landscapes, and proximity to New York City make it an attractive location for families and individuals alike.

Whether you're a history buff, nature lover, or simply seeking a peaceful place to call home, Bedford's storied past and vibrant present offer a unique and enriching living experience.
