History of Babylon

By Joshua Wood, LPC

Summary: A short history of Babylon is provided below for residents and anyone considering moving there.

Babylon, a charming town located on Long Island, New York, has a rich history that dates back to its founding in the 17th century. Originally part of Huntington, it was first settled by Nathaniel Conklin in 1689. The area, known for its fertile soil and abundant waterways, attracted settlers who were interested in agriculture and fishing.

In 1803, the town was officially named "Babylon" by Joseph Bunce, a local innkeeper who was inspired by the ancient city of Babylon, which he had read about in the Bible. The name was fitting, as the town was becoming a crossroads of commerce and community life. Throughout the 19th century, Babylon developed as a popular stop for stagecoaches and later, with the arrival of the Long Island Rail Road in 1867, it became a convenient link to New York City.

The 20th century saw Babylon transform into a suburban community, with many New Yorkers moving to the area for its picturesque landscapes and proximity to the city. The town's waterfront location made it a popular spot for boating and recreation, leading to the development of resorts and summer homes along the Great South Bay.

Today, Babylon continues to be a desirable place to live, offering residents a blend of historical charm and modern amenities. Its well-preserved downtown, excellent schools, and community-oriented atmosphere make it an attractive destination for families and individuals alike. Whether you're a history buff, nature lover, or simply seeking a friendly community, Babylon welcomes you to be a part of its ongoing story.
