History of Avon

Avon-by-the-Sea, commonly known as Avon, is a small seaside community in Monmouth County, New Jersey, with a rich history that dates back to the late 19th century. Established in 1900, Avon was originally incorporated as a borough by an act of the New Jersey Legislature, from portions of Neptune City. It was named after Avon, England, and designed to serve as a residential seaside resort.

The town's layout was the brainchild of Norwood H. Stockton, who envisioned a community with wide streets arranged in a grid pattern, complemented by elegant Victorian homes, a hallmark of its early development. The Avon Inn and The Norwood Inn, both of which are no longer standing, were among the first establishments that catered to summer visitors, setting the stage for Avon's reputation as a vacation destination.

Avon's picturesque setting, with its beautiful beaches and the scenic Sylvan Lake, famous for its swans, has made it a popular spot for tourists and residents alike.
