History of Asbury Park

By Joshua Wood, LPC

Summary: Here is a brief history of Asbury Park for both residents, viistors, or anyone considering moving there.

Asbury Park, nestled along the Jersey Shore, has a rich history that dates back to its founding in 1871 by James A. Bradley. Bradley, a New York brush manufacturer, envisioned a Christian resort that would cater to summer vacationers. He named the city after Francis Asbury, the first American bishop of the Methodist Episcopal Church in the United States. Asbury Park was officially incorporated in 1897.

The city quickly became a popular destination, known for its beautiful beaches and the grand Asbury Park Boardwalk. The boardwalk, constructed in 1880, became a hub of activity with the Paramount Theatre, the Convention Hall, and the Casino Arena and Carousel House drawing in crowds from all over. The city's music scene also began to flourish, with venues like the Stone Pony, where artists such as Bruce Springsteen and Jon Bon Jovi performed early in their careers.

However, like many American cities, Asbury Park faced challenges in the latter half of the 20th century, including economic downturns and social unrest. The city experienced a decline that lasted several decades, with many of its iconic buildings falling into disrepair.

In recent years, Asbury Park has seen a revival, with significant investment in the restoration of its historic buildings and the development of new businesses. The city's cultural and arts scene is thriving once again, making it an attractive place for residents and visitors alike. Asbury Park continues to evolve, blending its storied past with a vibrant and promising future.
