Cost of Living in Woodlawn

By Joshua Wood, LPC

Summary: If you are thinking about moving to Woodlawn, here is an overview of the cost of living there.

Woodlawn, often referred to as Woodlawn Heights, is a neighborhood located in the northern part of the Bronx. It is known for its close-knit community and suburban feel within the confines of New York City. The cost of living in Woodlawn can vary widely depending on the type of housing and lifestyle one chooses.

Housing prices in Woodlawn for 3 and 4 bedroom homes can range significantly based on the condition, size, and exact location within the neighborhood. As of my knowledge cutoff in early 2023, the median home value in the Bronx is around $550,000, but homes in Woodlawn can be higher due to its desirability. A 3-bedroom home in Woodlawn might range from $600,000 to $800,000, while a larger 4-bedroom could be anywhere from $700,000 to over $1 million, depending on the property's features and updates.

Apartment rentals in Woodlawn are also varied. A 1-bedroom apartment might cost between $1,500 and $2,000 per month, while a 2-bedroom could range from $1,800 to $2,500 or more. Apartment purchases, on the other hand, can range from $200,000 for a small 1-bedroom co-op to $500,000 or more for a larger, more updated 2-bedroom condo.

When it comes to dining out, Woodlawn offers a variety of restaurants that cater to different budgets. A meal at an inexpensive restaurant might cost around $15 to $25 per person, while a three-course meal at a mid-range restaurant could be between $50 and $100 per person, excluding drinks and gratuity.

Utilities, including electricity, heating, cooling, water, and garbage services for a standard 85m² apartment in New York City, can average around $150 to $250 per month, depending on usage and the time of year. However, these costs can be higher in the winter months due to heating expenses.

Private school tuition varies widely depending on the institution and the level of education. For preschool, annual tuition can range from $10,000 to $30,000. Elementary and middle schools can cost between $20,000 and $40,000 per year, while private high schools can range from $25,000 to over $50,000 annually. These costs are highly dependent on the school's reputation, facilities, and the educational programs offered.
