Cost of Living in Summit

By Betsy Burlingame

Summary: If you are thinking about moving to Summit, here is an overview of the cost of living there.

Summit, is a small, affluent city located in Union County, known for its high quality of life, excellent schools, and proximity to New York City. The cost of living in Summit is significantly higher than the national average, reflecting the desirability of the area and the wealth of many of its residents. Housing costs in Summit are a major factor in the overall cost of living, with prices for homes reflecting the city's affluence and attractive amenities.

As of my knowledge cutoff in early 2023, the housing market in Summit is quite expensive, with 3-bedroom homes typically starting at around $600,000 and can go well over $1 million depending on the location, size, and condition of the property. For 4-bedroom homes, prices are even higher, often starting at around $800,000 and can exceed $2 million for larger, more luxurious properties or those in the most sought-after neighborhoods.

Apartment rentals in Summit also reflect the high cost of living. A 1-bedroom apartment can cost anywhere from $1,800 to $2,500 per month, while a 2-bedroom apartment can range from $2,500 to $3,500 per month or more. Apartment purchases vary widely based on size, location, and amenities, but a 2-bedroom condo or townhouse might start at around $400,000 and can go up to $1 million or more for premium units.

Dining out in Summit can cater to a range of budgets, but many restaurants are on the pricier side, in line with the city's upscale atmosphere. A meal at a mid-range restaurant for two could cost between $50 and $100, while fine dining establishments can charge significantly more. Fast-casual and takeout options are more affordable, with meals typically in the $10 to $20 range.

Utilities in Summit, including electricity, heating, cooling, water, and garbage services, can cost around $200 to $300 per month for a standard-sized home, though this can vary based on usage and the time of year. Internet and cable services add to this cost, with packages typically starting at around $100 per month.

Private school tuition in Summit is another considerable expense for families. Preschools can range from $10,000 to $20,000 per year, depending on the program's length and prestige. Elementary and middle schools can cost between $20,000 and $35,000 per year, while private high schools can be even more expensive, with some tuitions exceeding $40,000 annually. These costs reflect the high-quality education and facilities that these private institutions often provide.
