Cost of Living in Princeton

By Betsy Burlingame

Summary: If you are thinking about moving to Princeton, here is an overview of the cost of living there.

Princeton, is known for its prestigious university and a high cost of living compared to the national average. Housing prices in Princeton can vary widely depending on the location, size, and amenities of the property. As of my knowledge cutoff in early 2023, the median home value in Princeton is quite high, with 3-bedroom homes typically ranging from $600,000 to over $1 million, depending on the exact location and condition of the property. For 4-bedroom homes, prices are generally higher, often ranging from $800,000 to well over $1.5 million. These prices reflect the town's desirability, proximity to New York City and Philadelphia, and the presence of Princeton University.

Apartment rentals in Princeton also reflect the town's upscale nature. A 1-bedroom apartment can cost anywhere from $1,500 to $2,500 per month, while a 2-bedroom apartment can range from $2,000 to $3,500 per month. For those interested in purchasing an apartment or a condo, prices can vary significantly based on location and amenities, but you can expect to pay anywhere from $300,000 to $700,000 or more for a 2-bedroom unit.

Dining out in Princeton can cater to a range of budgets, but on average, a meal at an inexpensive restaurant might cost around $15 to $25 per person, while a three-course meal at a mid-range restaurant could be between $50 and $100 per person, excluding drinks and gratuity. Upscale dining experiences and fine dining establishments will have higher prices.

Utilities, including electricity, heating, cooling, water, and garbage, for a standard 85m² apartment in Princeton, can range from $150 to $300 per month, depending on usage and the time of year. Internet services typically add another $60 to $100 to monthly expenses.

Private school tuition in Princeton is among the highest in the nation, reflecting the town's affluent population and high educational standards. Preschool costs can range from $10,000 to $20,000 per year. Elementary schools can cost between $20,000 and $30,000 per year, while middle and high schools can range from $30,000 to $40,000 or more per year, depending on the institution's prestige and offerings.
