Cost of Living in Ho-Ho-Kus

By Joshua Wood, LPC

Summary: If you are thinking about moving to Ho-Ho-Kus, here is an overview of the cost of living there.

Ho-Ho-Kus, is a small affluent borough in Bergen County, known for its high quality of life and proximity to New York City. The cost of living in Ho-Ho-Kus is significantly higher than the national average, reflecting the desirability of the area and the wealth of its residents. Housing costs are a major factor in the overall cost of living, with prices for homes being quite steep compared to many other parts of the country.

For housing, the median home value in Ho-Ho-Kus is well above the national average. As of my knowledge cutoff in early 2023, 3-bedroom homes in Ho-Ho-Kus typically range from $600,000 to over $1 million, depending on the size, condition, and exact location within the borough. 4-bedroom homes are even pricier, often starting at around $800,000 and can go up to several million dollars for larger, more luxurious properties or those in the most sought-after neighborhoods.

Apartment rentals in Ho-Ho-Kus are also on the higher end. A 1-bedroom apartment might start around $1,500 per month, while larger 2-bedroom apartments can exceed $2,500 per month. Apartment purchases are less common in this predominantly single-family home community, but condos and townhomes can range from $300,000 to $700,000 or more, depending on the size and amenities offered.

Dining out in Ho-Ho-Kus reflects the area's affluence, with many upscale restaurants offering fine dining experiences. A meal at a mid-range restaurant can cost between $50 and $100 per person, while a dinner at a high-end restaurant can easily exceed $100 per person, not including wine or drinks. Fast-casual and takeout options are more affordable, with meals typically ranging from $10 to $20 per person.

Utilities, including electricity, heating, cooling, water, and garbage services, can cost around $250 to $400 per month for a standard family home, depending on usage and the time of year. Internet and cable services add an additional $100 to $150 per month to the utility bills.

Private school tuition in Ho-Ho-Kus varies widely depending on the institution and the level of education. Preschool tuition can range from $10,000 to $20,000 per year. Elementary and middle schools can cost between $20,000 and $35,000 annually, while private high schools can be even more expensive, with some tuitions exceeding $40,000 per year. These costs reflect the high standard of education and facilities that these private institutions often provide.
