Cost of Living in Babylon

By Betsy Burlingame

Summary: If you are thinking about moving to Babylon, here is an overview of the cost of living there.

The cost of living in Babylon, can vary widely depending on the specific area within Babylon and the lifestyle one maintains. Housing prices in Babylon are generally high compared to the national average, reflecting the overall cost of living in the Long Island region. For 3 and 4 bedroom homes, buyers can expect a broad range of prices. As of my knowledge cutoff in early 2023, the median home value in Babylon is around $500,000, but prices can go significantly higher for larger homes or those in more desirable locations. For example, a 3-bedroom home may range from $400,000 to $600,000, while a 4-bedroom home could be anywhere from $500,000 to over $700,000 or more, depending on the size, condition, and exact location.

Apartment rentals also reflect the high cost of living in the area. A 1-bedroom apartment might rent for between $1,800 and $2,500 per month, while larger 2 or 3-bedroom apartments can easily exceed $3,000 per month. Apartment purchases, on the other hand, can vary widely, with condos and co-ops starting in the $300,000 range and going up to $1 million or more for luxury units with more space and amenities.

When it comes to dining out, Babylon offers a variety of restaurants ranging from casual eateries to upscale dining experiences. A meal at an inexpensive restaurant might cost around $15 to $25 per person, while a three-course meal at a mid-range restaurant could be between $50 and $100 per person, not including drinks, tax, or tip. Utilities, including electricity, heating, cooling, water, and garbage, can cost around $250 to $400 per month for a standard family home, though this can fluctuate based on usage and the time of year.

Private school tuition varies widely depending on the institution and the level of education. For preschool, annual tuition can range from $5,000 to $15,000 or more. Elementary schools might charge between $10,000 and $25,000 per year, while middle and high schools can cost anywhere from $15,000 to over $30,000 annually. These prices are indicative of private education in the region and can be higher for schools with more prestigious reputations or specialized programs.
