History of Yonkers

By Betsy Burlingame

Summary: Whether you're considering moving to Yonkers or are already below, here is a short history to help you understand how it has evolved into the place it is today.

Yonkers, New York, a vibrant city just north of the Bronx, boasts a rich history that dates back to the 17th century. Established by the Dutch West India Company in 1646 and later incorporated as a village in 1855, Yonkers grew from a small farming community into an industrial powerhouse.

The city's strategic location along the Hudson River made it an ideal spot for industry. In the 19th century, Yonkers became a hub for manufacturing, with the Saw Mill River powering numerous mills. The city's industry was diverse, ranging from sugar refining to carpet manufacturing, with the Alexander Smith and Sons Carpet Company becoming one of the world's leading carpet producers.

Yonkers also played a significant role in the development of new technologies. Elisha Otis invented the first safety elevator in Yonkers in 1853, revolutionizing building design and paving the way for the modern skyscraper. Additionally, Edwin Armstrong, an innovator in radio technology, conducted many of his experiments in Yonkers.

Throughout the 20th century, Yonkers continued to evolve, with its economy shifting towards retail and services. Today, Yonkers is known for its cultural diversity, beautiful Victorian homes, and revitalized waterfront, offering a blend of urban amenities and suburban comfort. The city's rich history is preserved in landmarks such as the Philipse Manor Hall and the Yonkers Raceway, a testament to its enduring legacy.

For those living in or considering a move to Yonkers, the city's history is a source of pride and a foundation for its future growth and development.
