History of Woodlawn

By Joshua Wood, LPC

Summary: It's helpful for people considering moving to Woodlawn to understand it's history and how it has developed into the community it is today.

Woodlawn, often referred to as Woodlawn Heights, is a residential, working-class neighborhood located in the northern part of the Bronx, New York City. Known for its close-knit community and rich Irish-American heritage, Woodlawn has a history that is deeply intertwined with the growth of New York City itself.

The area was originally part of Westchester County and was sparsely populated with farms and woodlands. In the 19th century, with the construction of the New York and Harlem Railroad, the neighborhood became more accessible, leading to increased settlement. The neighborhood's name, Woodlawn, is believed to have been inspired by the area's natural wooded landscape and its proximity to the historic Woodlawn Cemetery, established in 1863 and now a National Historic Landmark.

The early 20th century saw a significant influx of Irish immigrants, which has left a lasting impact on the community's culture. Many Irish pubs, restaurants, and shops can still be found in Woodlawn today, contributing to its distinctive character. The neighborhood has also been home to a diverse mix of residents over the years, including Italian, German, and more recently, Latin American and Caribbean communities.

Today, Woodlawn remains a desirable place to live due to its suburban feel, well-maintained homes, and strong community bonds. Its proximity to Van Cortlandt Park, one of the city's largest parks, and its easy access to public transportation, make it an attractive option for those looking to enjoy a quieter lifestyle while still being connected to the hustle and bustle of New York City.

For those considering moving to Woodlawn, the neighborhood offers a unique blend of history, culture, and community spirit, making it a charming and welcoming place to call home.
