History of Wantagh

Nestled in Nassau County on Long Island, Wantagh, New York, is a community with a rich history that dates back to the time before European settlement. Originally inhabited by the Merokee tribe of the Algonquin Indians, the area was known for its abundant wildlife and fertile land. The name "Wantagh" itself is believed to be derived from the Algonquin language, meaning "place of sand."

In the 17th century, European settlers arrived, and the area became part of the Jerusalem Purchase in 1676, when Thomas Powell bought land from the local Native Americans. The community was initially known as "Jerusalem," but it was later renamed "Wantagh" in 1885 to avoid postal confusion with another Jerusalem in New York.

The arrival of the Long Island Rail Road in 1867 spurred growth in Wantagh, making it more accessible for visitors and residents alike. The community transformed from a quiet farming area into a suburban haven by the early 20th century. Wantagh became known as "The Gateway to Jones Beach," with the construction of the Wantagh Parkway in 1929, which led directly to the famous Jones Beach State Park, a popular destination for recreation and relaxation.
